The Graduate Diploma in Education Conversion (Secondary) provides a conversion course for students with an existing qualification in Primary teaching who wish to re-train as Secondary teachers.

Students are required to successfully complete Methods subjects and Professional Experience relevant to their particular area of study, plus any other requirements as set out by the NSW Institute of Teachers.

Method areas may differ from year to year. Students are advised to check with the Faculty regarding the availability of specific Methods subjects.

PROFESSIONAL ACCREDITATION

The NSW Department of Education & Training regards a Bachelor degree followed by a Graduate Diploma in Education as being equivalent to four year trained status.

Please note that to teach in Victoria or in Queensland the four year status is the Graduate Diploma in Education plus a Master of Teaching Studies.

CREDIT TRANSFER

In special circumstances, a limited amount of credit may be granted in some postgraduate coursework degrees. The normal maximum is 25% of the course the student plans to undertake and will only be granted for previous studies at the same postgraduate level.

Credit may be granted for the coursework component of a Masters by Research degree to candidates with an Honours degree in an appropriate discipline and awarded at the required level.

Credit will not normally be awarded towards doctoral studies.

RECORD CHECK

The NSW Department of Education requires all teacher education students to undergo a criminal record check prior to commencement in a NSW government school. This check will be conducted by the NSW Police Service and will be coordinated by the NSW Department of Education.
