welcome applications to undertake PhD or Masters by Research in these
and other discipline areas and encourage sponsors and prospective
students to explore our academics’ areas of research expertise.

How to apply to undertake a Higher Degree Research at La Trobe University
- Identify your area of research interest and contact potential supervisors
It is compulsory for applicants to identify a potential academic supervisor for La Trobe to be able to process your Higher Degree Research application. Students are encouraged to use La Trobe’s website to find out more about staff members’ research interests before making contact with them about prospective supervision.
As applications will not be accepted unless a potential supervisor has been identified this is a critical step in the process. - Complete the research degree application from
Once a prospective supervisor has been confirmed at La Trobe please complete the research application form.
Students also need to contact academic referees from their previous studies and ask them to complete the Confidential Academic Referee Report form.
The Confidential Referee Reports must be completed on the La Trobe University Template and sent directly to La Trobe International atLTIResearch@latrobe.edu.au.
Forms that do not conform to these standards cannot be accepted. All other supporting documents, including confirmation of supervision, should also be submitted to LTIResearch@latrobe.edu.au. - Assessment of your application
La Trobe International will assess and forward your application to the relevant Faculty and the Higher Degrees Committee for consideration.Please note: this process may take up to eight weeks. All applicants will be advised as to whether their application has been successful. If an application is successful, students will receive an offer from
La Trobe University with instructions on how to accept.
