The University of Iowa currently ranks 29th among 164 public universities in the United States. You can see a complete list of our various rankings at http://www.uiowa.edu/facts/rankings/index.htm
We
currently have more than 3,400 international students and scholars from
over 100 different countries studying on our campus. Our total
enrollment is more than 32,000 professional, graduate and undergraduate
students. We are a large university located in a small city with a
population of 70,000. This creates a wonderful learning environment with
top faculty, state of the art equipment and a friendly atmosphere. Our
faculty/student ratio is 16:1. We have fewer than 30 students in 80% of
our classes. We provide a wide course selection typical of a larger
university, and a safe and beautiful campus. Getting around is easy if
you walk, ride a bike or take one of the free university buses that
circle the entire campus.

The
Office of Admissions processes the application but decisions are made
by the individual departments. Once the decision to admit is made
Admissions looks at the application to determine that minimum
eligibility requirements are met:
Applicants
must have a 4-year U.S. undergraduate degree equivalent (or higher)
with a GPA of 3.0 on a 4-point scale or the foreign equivalent.
A
TOEFL score of iBT 81/PBT 550 (some departments may require a higher
score) or an IELTS score of 7.0 with no sub-score less than 6.0.
The
TOEFL requirement will be waived if you have (or will have) earned a
bachelor's degree or higher from a university in the United States,
United Kingdom, Canada (excluding French Quebec), Africa (English
speaking), Australia, or New Zealand prior to your intended session of
enrollment.
Check
the departmental web page to determine their GRE or GMAT requirement,
and if they require additional supporting documentation.
Once
we are notified of an admission decision, and the student indicates
they want F-1 or J-1 student status, we will look for a financial
guarantee. This could include a sponsor’s statement, personal funds, a
departmental award or a combination of each.
Students apply online AFTER they go to their department’s Admissions webpage: http://grad.admissions.uiowa.edu/graduate-areas-of-study
Apply online
Submit official transcripts, original language and English translations (both Admissions and your department)
Submit TOEFL or IELTS
Submit GRE or GMAT, if required by your department
Submit
paperwork required by your department (see their website), such as a
resume, statement of purpose, letters of recommendation to your
departments mailing address
Submit
a financial guarantee (either at the application stage or after an
offer of admission) that shows the ability to pay for the first year of
study
Financial Assistance (Assistantships or Fellowships):
We
strongly suggest that you contact the department directly concerning
assistantships they offer, if this interests you. Teaching and research
assistantships are a great source of income for graduate students, and
they are available in most University departments. In general, students
with fellowships or graduate quarter-time or half-time assistantships
are classified as Iowa residents for tuition purposes (during the terms
in which their appointments are held and any adjacent summer sessions in
which they are enrolled). This means significant savings!
